School Learning Plan
Errol Hassell Elementary School
Our Story:
Errol Hassell Elementary School has a rich history. The community prides itself on the close relationships that staff and families have built over time. The vast majority of students who attend Errol Hassell live within the district’s “walk zone” making it a true neighborhood school. The interpersonal relationships between staff and with families span decades and across stages of life. The school has seen significant shifts in the students they serve since its inception in 1981. The biggest difference is the size of the school. Once well over 600 students, Errol Hassell now has only 350 students. The neighborhood surrounding Errol Hassell has seen a decrease in school-aged students. This shift is being felt through the system with only two sections of kindergarten this year. Additionally, the neighborhood has seen shifts in student population much aligned with the district of Beaverton to serve more students in poverty and more students from a historically marginalized community, however that diversity of students is waning shifting back as the neighborhood is experiencing significant increases in the costs of homeownership and rental inflation. This has resulted in the school no longer being designated as a “Title 1 school” which is a federal marker for schools that have a “high concentration” of students living in poverty.
